Zoyzia grass is grown in the warm seasons and is native to Japan, China and also in other Southeast Asia parts. This species of grass was named to honor Karl von Zois, who was an Austrian botanist in the 18 century. Zoysiagrass was introduced by C.V Piper, a U.S.D.A botanist, into the USA from Manila. The origin of the grass gave it its name in the US, Manila grass.

C.V Piper described Zoysiagrass as plentiful near or on seashore in the Philippines. When Zoysiagrass (Zoysia grass) is closely clipped – this was described according to Piper’s notes – it is just beautiful. C.V Piper also suggested that Zoysiagrass had somewhat unusual promise compared to other lawn grass grown along Florida’s Atlantic coast and the Gulf Coast.

Zoysiagrasses are known to be sod-forming species that possess rhizomes and stolons. In the winter Zoysiagrass turns brown and are among the first grasses to turn green in spring. Zoysiagrass varies from a fine texture to a coarse texture. The grass blades can be very stiff because of the high content of silica.

Zoysiagrasses are a versatile species and they make ideal lawns in many situations. The great thing is that Zoysiagrasses make great golf courses, athletic fields and parks. The great things about this species of grass are that they can grow in many different soils ranging from clays to sands, even if these soils have an alkaline and acid reaction. In the United States, zoysiagrasses can be found all along the Connecticut to Florida coast.

In the Southern parts of the United States this species of grass grows quite well in shaded locations. Zoysiagrasses don’t perform very well in shaded areas compared to other species in cool climates.

Zoysiagrass is also known to be drought tolerant. It turns kind of straw-like under drought conditions, but it also has the ability to respond to rainfall and irrigation. The amount of water it requires is similar to the amount of water the bermudagrass requires. The grass blades of zoysiagrass are among the first grass that rolls up in drought conditions. This species of grass also has a root system that is rather deep, and this allows the roots of the grass to extract water from soil depths.

Another thing the zoysiagrass has in common with bermudagrass is the fact that they are both salt tolerant. These grasses grow wildly along seashores especially where drainage is barely enough. Zoysiagrass has a very slow growth-rate, thus making their recuperative potential poor. This makes them ideal for lawns, baseball fields and golf courses. This type of grass is not recommended for soccer and football fields, because certain areas concentrate on a lot of traffic. Once grass wears out in these areas, zoysiagrass is the one grass that is extremely slow when it comes to repairing the damages.

There are 3 species of zoysia grass that are used on the turf: zoysia japonica, zoysia tenuifolia, and zoysia matrella. These three types are different when it comes to cold tolerance, texture and aggressiveness.

Caring for organic lawns relies mostly on feeding the turf grass by utilizing basic horticultural techniques that benefit the growing grass. It also relies on taking care of pest and weed problems without resorting to toxic chemicals. Taking care of an organic lawn sounds like a challenge, but it is the same as trying to prevent an ice cream from dripping ice cream on a hot day. That is all the challenge you are going to face, if that is the way you want to put it. All you have to be is persistent. Using organic methods, you can kiss all your organic lawn problems goodbye.

We all know that pride is one of the deadly sins, but having a great looking lawn is something to be proud of. People nowadays look at their lawn and think of it as their putting green. The one thing about putting greens is that these lawns are watered, chemically sprayed, fertilized and intensively managed lands around the world. All you have to do is loosen the stronghold you have on it and you will notice a much greener and healthier lawn. You will be able to spend your time doing other things than working up a sweat in the sun.

The first thing you have to do is raise the height of your lawnmower blades. If you live in the south, you want to consider raising the blades about 2 and half inches higher. If you live in the north 3 and half inches should be perfect.

The benefits of tall grass:

Grass blades that are larger make grass appear greener. Problem spots look less obvious than before – when you were mowing down to putting green lengths.
The extra bit of green found on the grass delivers nutrients to grass roots. This helps the grass grow deep, which in the end gives the grass access to water. Roots that grow deeper also mean that there is better access to the nutrients in the soil.

Thicker roots and taller greens work together to keep weeds out. This is done when the roots prevent weed seeds from germinating and eventually crowding the grass that tries to germinate.
Tall grass helps keep out the sun and keeps the sun off the soil. This preserves the water content.
Long lawns require little mowing, and if you are going to cut the lawn shorter this stimulates the plants to grow faster, because they have to make up for the greenery they have lost when the grass was long.

Experts would recommend that you only cut off a third of your grass at one time. If you go more you could stress the grass. If you are going to cut at a height of 3 and half inches, you probably want to mow the lawn by the time it gets to 5 inches tall.

As you can see, this might sound complicated, but it is really not. All you have to do is be patient and take your time, and everything will go smoothly.

Now that you have your new lawn sorted, you are in need of some good lawn care products. Or maybe your lawn has always been fine and you just decided that you need to try something new. Whatever the reason, there is no need to look any further.

Here we will discuss some of the most popular and effective lawn care products, all of which will be environmentally friendly so you won’t have to worry about damaging the planet when you are taking care of your lawn. Lawn care products are not always easy to find, and it is normally better when you can look at a few at a time and not spend hours researching and looking at different products.

The organic fertilizers, tools and pest control products as well as many more items are great if you are looking to naturally enhance your beautiful lawn. They are made to slot in the defenses that insects and plants evolved over the hundreds of years, and they will also be responsible for keeping your garden safe, healthy, and nice and green! You have to look after your garden appropriately if you expect your grass to grow properly and look nice. Products will keep it looking fresh and it won’t look like you just bought it and plunked it there. It will look good like you put a lot of time and effort into it.

There is a weed and feed that is an organic pre-emergent and is safe for your shrubs, plants and pets and it will not burn your lawn. This is known as the Organic Weed and Feed. If you are looking for an easy way to fertilize your lawn what you could use is the Organic Liquid Lawn Fertilizer, which gets attached to your normal hose and from there you spray in onto your lawn. With a 32 ounce bottle you will be able to cover 4000 squared feet or grass. Then there is the Rich Earth Soil Conditioner that is a mineral additive for soil and it does just about every bit of goodness for your soil. It reinstates more than 70 trace minerals by using prehistoric plant matter.

Other options you have when looking for lawn care products is the Natural Liquid Thatch Remover, which also gets attached to your garden hose and you spray it on. It covers about 5000 squared feet of grass per bottle. The Yard Insect Repellent Granules will keep your precious lawn safe from those biting insects that keep destroying it, and you don’t have to worry as it is safe for the children as well as the pets because it is made from a natural product that is from cedar. A Stainless Steel Pump Action Sprayer might be a good idea if you want to spray the garden quickly but efficiently. It can hold up to 5Liters of liquid fertilizer, herbicide, insect repellent or whatever else you want to spray on the lawn.

You have many things to choose from when you are looking for lawn care products. All you have to do is know what you want.

If you head to your local home improvement store in hope of finding lawn fertilizer that is going to work for you, you are going to feel overwhelmed when you actually see what is going on in the stores.

You will come across so many fertilizers, it will feel as though you have stepped through a door into another world and have come across the largest selection of fertilizer in your life. This will be known to you as fertilizer paradise … or purgatory, depending how overwhelmed you are. When you come across so many fertilizers on one shelf from all these companies, it makes it kind of hard to decide on the right fertilizer for you.

Liquid lawn fertilizer is the one fertilizer that responds very quickly once you have applied it to the lawn. This is not the granules that you sprinkle over the lawn that requires watering to activate and a few days before you actually notice that something is happening. Take the time to educate yourself with the disadvantages and also the advantages of these types of fertilizers. This will allow you to make a decision quicker the next time you walk into an improvement store and find yourself in fertilizer paradise … or purgatory.

Some of the advantages include:

Liquid lawn fertilizer means that it is a liquid, and because of this fact you will be able to apply this to the lawn evenly and much quicker. You will decrease the chances of burning the grass considerably.

Again because it is liquid, applying the liquid spray to the lawn is simple.
Once this liquid is applied to leaves and roots, it takes immediate effect. The lawn will perk up and receive the nutrients it requires immediately.
Weeds are warded off by the combination of herbicide and fertilizer.
You will be glad to know that those back-breaking days of carrying heavy bags of fertilizer granules are over. All you will be carrying around with you is the liquid fertilizer, a spray bottle and the hose connection.

Some of the disadvantages you have to look at are:

If there is no hose you have lying around to attach to the liquid fertilizer container, then the whole idea of purchasing this type of fertilizer will be a waste.
Liquid fertilizers are a bit more costly that the granule fertilizers.

Because the effect of the liquid fertilizer to the lawn is immediate, the solution has to be applied to the lawn frequently. If you have a large lawn, you will be paying more for liquid fertilizer compared to other fertilizers. You also spend a lot more time performing this task on a regular basis.

Now that you know all the disadvantages and advantages of the liquid fertilizer, the choice is up to you. If you are prepared to pay an extra bit of money for this type of fertilizer then you will not experience any problems. However, for others it would be best to stick to granules.

If you are sitting down and thinking of going with planting sod or going all out and tackling grass seed, you have to remember that both methods are going to require of you to prepare the site the same way.…

If you are sitting down and thinking of going with planting sod or going all out and tackling grass seed, you have to remember that both methods are going to require of you to prepare the site the same way. There are numerous advantages when it comes to planting grass seeds. We all know that seeds cost less. They are also easier to plant, and at the end of the day planting grass seeds establishes a healthier lawn. You don’t have to be a professional or a gardener to plant grass seeds. With simple techniques and tools, beginners can even do it, and do it properly.

If you want to establish a healthy lawn you have to make sure you choose the right type of grass. When looking at grass, many of us would not be able to tell between the different types of grasses. They would just look alike to us. However, if you are a horticulturist you will be able to tell the difference, because it is these horticulturists that know what grass would grow properly where and under which conditions.

Certain things you have to look at when choosing the right seed:

You have to find what your garden zone is. Determine your zone and this will narrow down your choices considerably.
Review the blends of the different seeds and also the various varieties.
If you have grass seed in your workshop or shed you should check the expiration date. If the bag is open and the seeds inside are expired, the germination rate is lowered considerably compared to new seeds. It is going to be a waste of your time to go through all the labor of planting your expired seeds and in the end find that the seeds won’t germinate.

If you are unsure of the pH of the soil, acquire a sample and let your garden center run a test. Your soil will probably need amendments to achieve the right pH level in order to germinate. Lawns grow under neutral pH or soil with a little acidity – around 6.0 to around 7.0. When you get the results of the soil back you are probably going to have to add lime or/and other amendments.

The area that you are going to be planting the seeds should be cleaned of debris. Sticks and rocks should be moved or removed. Weeds must be removed by hand. Weed killers are a no-no on areas you are about to plant grass seed. Weed killers prevent germination and grass seed need to germinate. Four inches of soil must be turned wherever the seed will be thrown. Rake the top smooth.

Use your hand or mechanical seeder and with a back and forth movement scatter the seed. Get an even coverage and fill in spots that you missed.

When you are done, cover the seeds with soil. Do this with a rake or sprinkle the soil over the seeds. Water the area daily, but be careful not to flood the area. Keep the area moist or wet until grass blades are around 2 inches high.

When buying a new machine to cut your grass, be sure to research riding lawn mower tires. This will give you an idea about the quality of each specific brand you check out. Riding lawn mowers are great machines to purchase when you have too much grass to use a push lawn mower, but don’t need other extensions such as the leaf blower or plow found on a garden tractor. Lawn mower tires come in five basic varieties.

Ribbed tires are the most common category of riding lawn mower tires. These make both great front and back wheels, but are mostly used for front tires. The ribbed design helps minimize damage to your lawn, and they are resistant to wear and tear. Smooth tires also minimize damage to your turf. In this case, however, you will get little to no traction. Used on the front of the tire, it is good to use in rocky conditions. The design resists punctures from anything sticking out of your lawn, while creating less damage to the grass.

If your lawn does not need fragile care, there are three other options as well. Longest lasting will be multi-trac c/s tires, which have a beveled shoulder. These will not be quite as hard on your lawn as a studded tire, Lawn Mower Tireswhich provides you with a lot of traction and works well as back tired on your riding lawn mower. This is the industrial strength version of riding lawn mower tires. A last option is the tx, which has more traction than a regular tire and works well with heavy loads.

The tires that are best for your lawn will have a high rubber to space ratio; that is, the tire will be mostly material without many gaps. This type of tire will be gentle on your lawn. However, you also want to choose a tire that will provide good traction so that you can keep your gardening and lawn maintenance safe. Take all these things into consideration when choosing riding lawn mower tires.

Proper soil preparation for St Augustine sod is the most influential factor on establishing a St Augustine lawn. It’s a process involving several steps that, if undertaken correctly, make maintaining a lush and healthy lawn considerably easier.

The first step involves soil testing. Possibly the easiest way to do this, would be to dig a small hole in each area of your garden in which you intend to plant, take a small sample of soil from each and mix the samples together in a bucket. This creates an “average” soil sample from your garden.

The soil can then be tested at a garden centre, or by using a DIY soil-testing kit. The results can uncover a number of different problems – each requiring different remedies – including high or low levels of potassium, pH, phosphorous, nitrogen and drainage. These problems are usually fairly easy to remedy by adding ingredients such lime, sulfur or bonemeal to the soil.

Once any problems with your soil have been dealt with, it’s time to get rid of any weeds. to provide a clean planting site. You can then add any fill or topsoil before you plant the sod. You can incorporate fertilizer now, or wait until the new turf has started rooting to the soil. The choice of what fertilizer to use should be based on the results of your soil test.St Augustine Sod

Before planting, it’s important to make sure that the soil is smooth, graded and well-plowed. Also be sure to rid the planting area of sticks, leaves and stones, as they can all hinder the sod from becoming properly rooted. Finally, just prior to laying the sod, lightly water the soil. This prevents the sod from drying out while being installed.

With correct irrigation, your lawn should thrive – but it’s something that all starts with proper soil preparation for St Augustine sod.

A soil psychrometer, simply put, is an instrument used to measure water in the ground. You may be familiar with a regular psychrometer, which scientists and weather forecasters use to measure water in the air. The concept is the same, and both types of psychrometers are important and useful tools for not only scientists, but also for gardeners and farmers.

Water content in soil helps professionals learn when and how to plant crops. It is also important to learn a soil’s water content when building an irrigation system. A soil psychrometer is especially useful in this situation, as the instrument is very accurate in dry conditions.

Soil psychrometers work by comparing two pieces of data. The instrument has two “bulbs,” one that is 100% wet and one that is 100% dry. By comparing the two readings, you can get a value between 0.5 and 30, which can be converted into water content. The process is long, because you must wait for vapor equilibrium, and the readings are not as accurate when the soil is very wet, but the instrument is highly sensitive in dry conditions, making it a vital tool for farmers in arid regions.

Many alternatives are available for people who do not wish to use a soil psychrometer. One of the simplest ways to measure water content is to weigh exactly one pound of soil and then dry it out completely and weight it again. The difference Soil Psychrometerbetween the two weights is water content. This method is not very accurate, but a good way for home gardeners to learn more about their soil conditions. A number of pieces of scientific equipment are available as well.

Before buying a water content reading device, know what is important to you. What are your soils’ other properties? How accurate does the reading need to be? How humid is your climate? How much are you willing to spend? How much skill and experience in water content measuring do you have? After answering these basic questions, ask a professional at your local garden center to help you choose an instrument. There are many varieties of water content instruments, and only by answering the above questions you can decide if a soil psychrometer is right for you.

When planting a garden, one prominent item in your budget should be top soil cost. With each bag running you $20 or more, its important to protect yourself from low-quality material marketed as high-quality dirt. There are a number of things to consider when selecting a brand of top soil to ensure that you are getting the best bang for your buck.

The simplest way of evaluating top soil is to look at and feel the product. Good top soil will crumble through your fingers without too much clumping. It will also be a rich dark brown color. Get your face down there-good top soil will smell sweet and earthy.

Top soil cost should be proportionate to quality. If you are buying a large amount of dirt, you may want to get it professionally tested to make sure you aren’t getting ripped off. Sometimes, top soil companies are not necessarily scamming consumers, but their product is from an areTop soil a that does not coincide with the soil in your garden. Although it is not a bad product, it may not be right for you. A test will tell give you an idea of quality and usability. Top soil tests will look at four things: pH, salt content, organic matter and texture.

You want the pH level to be between 5 and 8, with better quality being at a neutral 7 on the pH scale. Of course, research according to what you will be planting-some plant life is more sensitive to pH than others. Top soil cost should reflect pH first and foremost. Salt is also an important factor-too much salt will make it difficult for your plants to get the water they need. If you can see salt crystals in the soil, there is probably too much to be acceptable. Quality top soil should also have at least a 1% organic matter make-up. This especially should be consistent with your local soil; lower values are ok in some situations. The last test is for texture, i.e., the sand, silt, and clay content in the soil. An ideal product is less than 30% clay and less than 70% sand.

A garden professional can further help you evaluate the top soil brands. When you find a company the sell a quality product, be sure to return to this brand for your top soil needs, as it will have to be replaced at least every few years, more if you live where there is a lot of erosion. Top soil cost should be a primary concern for every new gardener.

Creating soil lessons plans is a good way for teachers to help their students learn more about the environment. Without taking care of our earth, including the very ground that we walk on, we cannot enjoy its beauty as the year pass. Lessons including facts about and fun activities with soil can help teach this to our children.

There are a number of objectives that are possibilities for lesson plans involving soil. One possible topic is the layers of soil on earth. To demonstrate this, students can create models of the earth using different colors of clay. Have the children form a ball with red clay using about 1/4 of a block of clay. This represents the core. Next, have them cover their red ball with an entire block of brown clay. This represents the second layer of soil in the earth. Finally, use about 1/4 of a block of green clay to cover the brown. This represents the crust, which is what we see. Cut each child’s ball in half so they can see the different layers. Talk about the class about the characteristics of each layer. Have them guess, for instance, why you used red clay to create the core and green for the crust.

Another soil-related activity you can do with your students analyzes the biological life in soil. Discuss why soil is important in the animal and plant world. Soil Lesson PlansWhat animals live in soil? What animals eat soil? Then, if possible take a field trip to the playground and dig up a patch of soil. What creepy-crawlers can your class find? Discuss with the children how soil is important not only to worms and spiders, but also to humans because much of the food we eat is grown. Also discuss how soil becomes polluted and what we should do to keep our earth clean.

There are countless other activities also available for soil-related topics. Children will be amazed about how much there is to learn about something they see every day, like dirt. This can also lead to lessons about other pollution topics such as air and water. With a little innovation, teachers can prepare soil lesson plans to help our children learn to take care of the earth.
