When looking at grass, many of us would not be able to tell between the different types of grasses. They would just look alike to us. However, if you are a horticulturist you will be able to tell the difference, because it is these horticulturists that know what grass would grow properly where and under which conditions.

Certain things you have to look at when choosing the right seed:

You have to find what your garden zone is. Determine your zone and this will narrow down your choices considerably.
Review the blends of the different seeds and also the various varieties.
If you have grass seed in your workshop or shed you should check the expiration date. If the bag is open and the seeds inside are expired, the germination rate is lowered considerably compared to new seeds. It is going to be a waste of your time to go through all the labor of planting your expired seeds and in the end find that the seeds won’t germinate.

If you are unsure of the pH of the soil, acquire a sample and let your garden center run a test. Your soil will probably need amendments to achieve the right pH level in order to germinate. Lawns grow under neutral pH or soil with a little acidity – around 6.0 to around 7.0. When you get the results of the soil back you are probably going to have to add lime or/and other amendments.

The area that you are going to be planting the seeds should be cleaned of debris. Sticks and rocks should be moved or removed. Weeds must be removed by hand. Weed killers are a no-no on areas you are about to plant grass seed. Weed killers prevent germination and grass seed need to germinate. Four inches of soil must be turned wherever the seed will be thrown. Rake the top smooth.

Use your hand or mechanical seeder and with a back and forth movement scatter the seed. Get an even coverage and fill in spots that you missed.

When you are done, cover the seeds with soil. Do this with a rake or sprinkle the soil over the seeds. Water the area daily, but be careful not to flood the area. Keep the area moist or wet until grass blades are around 2 inches high.
