Planting Grass Seed

If you are sitting down and thinking of going with planting sod or going all out and tackling grass seed, you have to remember that both methods are going to require of you to prepare the site the same way. There are numerous advantages when it comes to planting grass seeds. We all know that seeds cost less. They are also easier to plant, and at the end of the day planting grass seeds establishes a healthier lawn. You don’t have to be a professional or a gardener to plant grass seeds. With simple techniques and tools, beginners can even do it, and do it properly.

grass-seedIf you want to establish a healthy lawn you have to make sure you choose the right type of grass. When looking at grass, many of us would not be able to tell between the different types of grasses. They would just look alike to us. However, if you are a horticulturist you will be able to tell the difference, because it is these horticulturists that know what grass would grow properly where and under which conditions.

Certain things you have to look at when choosing the right seed:

You have to find what your garden zone is. Determine your zone and this will narrow down your choices considerably.
Review the blends of the different seeds and also the various varieties.
If you have grass seed in your workshop or shed you should check the expiration date. If the bag is open and the seeds inside are expired, the germination rate is lowered considerably compared to new seeds. It is going to be a waste of your time to go through all the labor of planting your expired seeds and in the end find that the seeds won’t germinate.

If you are unsure of the pH of the soil, acquire a sample and let your garden center run a test. Your soil will probably need amendments to achieve the right pH level in order to germinate. Lawns grow under neutral pH or soil with a little acidity – around 6.0 to around 7.0. When you get the results of the soil back you are probably going to have to add lime or/and other amendments.

The area that you are going to be planting the seeds should be cleaned of debris. Sticks and rocks should be moved or removed. Weeds must be removed by hand. Weed killers are a no-no on areas you are about to plant grass seed. Weed killers prevent germination and grass seed need to germinate. Four inches of soil must be turned wherever the seed will be thrown. Rake the top smooth.

Use your hand or mechanical seeder and with a back and forth movement scatter the seed. Get an even coverage and fill in spots that you missed.

When you are done, cover the seeds with soil. Do this with a rake or sprinkle the soil over the seeds. Water the area daily, but be careful not to flood the area. Keep the area moist or wet until grass blades are around 2 inches high.

When Can We Plant Grass Seed?
Mon, 22 Feb 2010 15:45:17 GMT
We bought a home in November. Our builder laid out the hay/seeds/ etc... and we saw a little bit of grass before winter hit. However, most of the snow has washed away our progress. When should we seed - and what is the best process (seeds/hay etc?) to have the best results. We are completely new at this. Thanks.

Voting Question: Do I Use Fertilizer When Planting New Grass Seed?
Thu, 18 Feb 2010 17:32:35 GMT
I have tilled my yard a couple times the past couple months and the ground is real soft and fine right now. I am going to start a new lawn and there is nothing "living" in the dirt. It is ready to be seeded. I bought some new bluegrass/fescue seed and some scotts turf builder. Should I put the fertilizer first then the seed or do it at the same time? Is there anything else I should do to the dirt to make sure I get a nice new lawn?

Thu, 18 Feb 2010 14:46:59 GMT
I live in florida, and my back yard looks horrible. Once it starts getting a little warmer outside i would like to buy a few bags of grass seed for my back yard. Any suggestions to the type of grass seed to use and about how long does it normally take to grow. FYI: i would like something a little thicker then rye grass, and something that will last for a long time and work well with florida weather. Thanks in advance :)
