How to Build a Racing Lawn Mower

Want to know how to build a racing lawn mower? This article will provide a basic overview of the steps involved, and may well set you on your way. Known colloquially as “the cheapest form of motor sport”, lawnmower racing is becoming increasingly popular. And for every lawn mower racing aficionado, there are many wannabe’s who just want to know how to get started in the first place. Before you get started, however, it’s definitely good to have access to tools such a sandblaster, angle grinder, welder, drill and jigsaw. Parts such as T drives and brake parts can be sourced locally, or bought online. Here are a few tips:

* Start out with an old second-hand mower, and strip it down to the chassis. Sandblast it.
* Clean if necessary.
* You’ll need to buy metal to strengthen the chassis and parts for the back axle. If you know what you are doing you can weld it on yourself, otherwise you can seek professional help.
* You can get your back axle set up by a precision engineering firm
* Using a jigsaw, a hole saw, a drill and ¼” aluminum, cut an eRacing Lawn Mowerngine plate.
* Now’s the time to source a steering set, tires, wheels and an engine. You can do this by searching classifieds, looking online or finding a local supplier of Go-Kart parts.
* Weld the steering onto the chassis
* Fit the back axle, wheels and tires or get them fitted by a professional.
* Fit the brake caliper and make pedals for the brake, clutch and accelerator.
* Fit the engine, pulleys, belts and clutch.
* Weld a frame for the steering column, or have a welder do it for you.
* Go to your local wrecking hard and find a steering wheel and a seat.
* Fire it up! Taking your racing lawnmower for a run over grass and bitumen allows you to get a “feel” for how it runs, and to identify problems with brakes and steering etc

If you’re interested in lawnmower racing, knowing how to build a racing lawnmower is a valuable skill that will provide you with immense enjoyment.

Want To Change Rear Tires On Lawn Mower?
Tue, 22 May 2012 19:28:47 GMT
I have a 2l" MTD mower and would like to put larger rear tires on it. The current tires are aprox 8". Do I have to replace the axle on the rear (because the larger tires bring up the deck making it uneven) ? My lawn is very rough and the larger tires would help to push. Thanks Thanks Smokey, for the quick answer. The mower is older and I don't have extra room due to the grass bag being so close to the rear. Thanks for not laughing at the question. Most folks would just make fun of me.
